Ambulatory Surgery Center Tour
The Pre-Operative Area
The pre-op area is the first place you will visit in the Surgical Suite. In the pre-operative area, the nurse will interview you, answering any questions you may have. You will receive patient education in the pre-operative area. The patient education may consist of pain assessment, pain management, crutch walking, etc. A nurse will begin your IV in the pre-operative area.
The anesthesiologist will conduct a pre-anesthetic interview with you. The goal of the interview is to identify any potential risks to you before you are given anesthesia. You and the anesthesiologist will discuss the types of anesthesia and determine the best anesthetic method for you.
It is very important that you share information about your medical history. Bring a list of all medications and current dosages you're taking. The list should include prescription medications, and nonprescription medications as well as herbal and vitamin supplements. Be honest about any use of street drugs which can react dangerously to some anesthesia drugs.
Your surgeon will visit with you and answer any additional questions you may have. The surgeon will also review the procedure with you. Next stop, the operating room!
