Bruce S. Zimmer, MD

Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, and having lived in a number of places as a military dependent, Dr. Bruce Zimmer has always liked to build things and work with his hands on everything from cars to wood. He chose orthopaedics because the field allows him to combine his love for building with his interest in human anatomy. Dr. Zimmer graduated magna cum laude with a BS from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, and then earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He stayed on at the Medical College of Virginia to complete both his surgical internship and orthopaedic residency.

Dr. Zimmer has been in private orthopaedic practice in Alexandria since 1986. With a genuine love for helping patients, he takes particular interest in sports medicine, adult reconstructive surgery, total joint surgery of the lower extremity, and knee arthroscopies.

Actively involved in hospital leadership, Dr. Zimmer served as Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Inova Alexandria Hospital from 1995-2002. He continues on staff there and has served as a member and chairman of the Credentials Committee and as a member of the Medical Executive Committee. Additionally, Dr. Zimmer has acted as team physician for several area high schools for the past twenty years.

Dr. Zimmer has children and 5 grandchildren.  In his spare time he enjoys sports, camping, hiking and music - an interest he nurtures by playing guitar, piano and harmonica.  He is in a local rock band and plays in local clubs.  Dr. Zimmer's bands website is:  AUTOMATICBAND.NET.
