Thomas A. Martinelli, MD

As a tri-captain and varsity-letter winner on the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute basketball team, Dr. Thomas Martinelli gained collegiate athletic experience that would well prepare him for a career in orthopaedics and sports medicine. After graduating cum laude with a BS in Biology from Rennselaer in Troy, New York, Dr. Martinelli earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, attending on a Navy HPSP Scholarship. He then completed a six year residency in orthopaedic surgery at Georgetown University Medical Center. Upon completion of his residency program, Dr. Martinelli was stationed for two years in Naples, Italy, followed by two years at the Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, where he served as Chief of Sports Medicine from 1994-1995.

After fulfilling his naval duties, Dr. Martinelli joined Alexandria Orthopaedic Associates, which merged with Commonwealth Orthopaedics in 1999. His special interests within orthopaedics include joint replacement of the hip, knee, and shoulder, sports medicine, and fracture care.

Dr. Martinelli has been the Medical Staff Treasurer at Inova Alexandria Hospital for five years and is currently the Orthopedic Section Chief.  A frequent lecturer for the Inova Alexandria Hospital lecture series, Dr. Martinelli speaks to the public and physician groups on the topics of arthritis, joint replacement, and knee pain. He also had the opportunity to participate in the first Sports Medicine Day at the USA Today offices in Rosslyn. In addition to his involvement in the professional medical community, Dr. Martinelli serves as team physician for Falls Church High School and assists with Lake Braddock, Episcopal, and Saint Stephen’s & St. Agnes’ schools.

Dr. Martinelli is married to his high school sweetheart with whom he has two children.  The Martinelli’s reside in Fairfax Station. In his leisure time, Dr. Martinelli continues to stay active in the Burke Basketball scene, competing in the Grey Hair League and the JCC League. He also enjoys bicycling, skiing, and home improvement.

Patient Testimonials

Yelp.com Comments:
I saw Dr. Thomas Martinelli for a bad knee and I was happy with visits I had. He's professional, friendly and seems to enjoy his work. The only thing I would suggest is to come prepared with questions, if you have them - the visits are brief and I could see how a less-prepared person might feel rushed.

Vitals.com Comments:
Dr. Martinelli is an absolutely excellent physician & surgeon. Having had 2 surgeries by Dr. Martinelli & being an R.N. I could not recommend anyone more than him. Dr. Martinelli has also operated on my husband & my mother-in-law & we all received superior care throughout the entire pre & post-operative time. Dr. Martinelli is a very caring & sensitive physician who spends as much time as is needed with his patients to make sure they understand everything. I have recommended Dr. Martinelli to many people & will continue to do so.
