William A. Hazel Jr., MD
A founding member and president of Commonwealth Orthopaedics, Dr. William Hazel received his BS in Civil Engineering from Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey, and earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina. He then completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic.
A respected leader at the local, state, and national levels, Dr. Hazel is a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association and has served as speaker and president of The Medical Society of Virginia, president of the Fairfax County Medical Society, president of the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital medical staff, and chairman of the Inova Health System Medical Affairs Council.
Dr. Hazel also stays involved in a number of professional medical organizations and serves as a dedicated member of the medical community. With an interest in sports medicine, he has worked as assistant orthopaedic surgeon for the Washington Redskins and the DC United soccer team, and he continues to volunteer as team physician for Chantilly High School. Additionally, he initiated and participated in two mission trips to Bolivia where he has conducted 25 joint replacement procedures in a remote public hospital that services the San Juan de Dios area’s poorest population.
Dr. Hazel and his wife live in Oakton and have two adult children. In his limited spare time, Dr. Hazel enjoys reading, traveling and following Washington, DC sports teams.
