About Commonwealth Orthopaedics
Leaders. Educators. Volunteers.
These words describe the physicians of Commonwealth Orthopaedics. Many of our physicians are involved in leadership roles within area hospitals, professional medical societies, and on the national level.
Commonwealth physicians are also involved with medical schools through professorships and participation in on-site physician resident training and mentoring. As our physicians give back to the community what they have gained, they train future physicians and remain abreast of the latest developments in medical education and research. They also use their expertise to further the education and training of other health professionals such as Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs).
As active members of their local communities, our physicians serve as team physicians for 18 local high schools, Olympic level athletes as well as professional and collegiate teams. Many also serve as coaches in youth athletics, as leaders in civic organizations, and as volunteers for medical missions and other nonprofit causes. At Commonwealth Orthopaedics, we are committed to providing our community the very best in orthopaedic care.
Mission Statement
Commonwealth Orthopaedics, an orthopaedic surgery group practice, provides comprehensive, high quality, cost effective care to patients with injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
We act with the best interest of our patients in mind, strive to provide the best medical care available, and treat our patients with respect, compassion, and confidentiality.
We attempt to minimize the inconveniences of treatment to our patients by providing prompt, courteous service. To this end, we offer as part of our practice, outpatient outpatient surgery and physical therapy.
We promote quality medical care in the community through participation in hospital medical staff functions, benchmarking with similar organizations and participation with local and national medical societies. We participate with the local medical educational institutions to prepare new healthcare professionals for our community.
We keep the health and well-being of our patients as our top priority.

Patient Satisfaction
Over 15,000 patients responded to our satisfaction surveys this year and gave us top marks for the service they received:
- 92% rated their overall office visit as excellent or very good
- 97% of patients who had surgery in one of our outpatient surgery centers rated their overall care as excellent or very good
- 100% of physical therapy patients stated the overall quality of care was excellent
Pain Management
Nearly 1400 appointments were made to our pain management program. The pain management program at Commonwealth Orthopaedics has a board-certified anesthesiologist with extensive training in the area of procedural pain management on staff who is experienced in treating neuropathies, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, and chronic and acute back pain.
With the addition of a new Physiatrist in 2008, services and locations have been expanded. Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), or physiatry, is a branch of medicine dealing with functional restoration of a person affected by physical disability. A physiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the non-operative treatment of disorders of nerves, muscles, and joints. In addition to pain management, services within physiatry include the diagnosis and treatment of athletic injuries, running and gait biomechanics, electromyography/nerve condition studies, and BOTOX injections for pain relief.
The procedures most commonly used in the Pain Management Program include:
- Epidural steroid injections (cervical and lumbar)
- Median branch blocks
- Facet blocks
- Lumbar sympathetic blocks (for treating Complex Regional Pain Syndrome)
Patient Visits
In 2008, more than 150,000 patient visits were made to our practice. Sixty-six (66%) of the office visits were patients returning for orthopaedic care. Our seven physical therapy clinics scheduled more than 75,000 appointments. The physical therapy clinics are located adjacent to the physician offices making the coordination of care between the physicians and therapists convenient for our patients.

Total Number of Surgical Procedures
More than 12,000 procedures were performed by our surgeons, with 45% of those being performed arthroscopically. Our surgeons operate at Inova’s Alexandria, Fairfax, Fair Oaks, and Loudoun hospitals; Reston Hospital Center; Virginia Hospital Center and our two Outpatient Surgery Centers located in Herndon and Fairfax.

Hand/Wrist/Elbow Surgeries
More than 5,000 arthroscopies (over 22 per day) were performed in 2008 to treat many sports related injuries and other conditions. Commonwealth Orthopaedics performs more arthroscopies than any other orthopaedic practice in the Northern Virginia metropolitan area. Our physicians are experts, innovators and teachers in the field of arthroscopic surgery. We utilize the latest state-of-the-art procedures and equipment to keep all levels of athletes functioning at their best with the ultimate goal to get them “back to their lives” quickly and safely.

Pediatric Care
Care for these young patients includes medical and surgical orthopaedic care including strains and sprains, fracture care and treatment for scoliosis. In 2008, more than 17,000 pediatric visits were made to Commonwealth physicians.

Total Joint Program
Commonwealth Orthopaedics total joint replacement program helps patients alleviate pain and regain mobility every day. Our program features a comprehensive approach to patient care from an interdisciplinary team of experienced orthopaedic surgeons, physical therapists and other health care professionals, as well as on-site dedicated rehabilitation facilities.
Performing nearly 1200 joint replacement procedures annually, our surgeons are widely respected leaders and educators in the field.
Most importantly, our patients are satisfied. An overwhelming majority – 99% – say that total joint replacement surgery at Commonwealth Orthopaedics alleviated their pain, while nearly 95% experienced “good to excellent” improvement in function and activity level.

Surgeries at Commonwealth Orthopaedics’ Outpatient Surgery Centers
Since 1999, Commonwealth has been providing patients a convenient alternative for surgery in our outpatient surgery centers, located in Herndon and Fairfax, which was added in 2001. Over 4000 surgical cases were performed in our outpatient surgery centers in 2008, a 48% increase over 2007, with the top procedures being knee arthroscopies, ACL repairs, shoulder arthroscopies and carpal tunnel surgeries.

Fracture Care
Both surgical and non-surgical fracture care is provided for over 6500 patients annually, representing a large portion of orthopaedic care provided by our physicians and staff.
